Breast cancer kills less, decreased mortality in Europe

This is positive news on the front breast cancer, rightly called the number one killer of women especially young people. Well, apparently this “murderess” is a bit less fierce than in the past, in fact in the EU rate mortality linked precisely to the incidence of this neoplasia dropped by 7% from 2002 to 2006. Data were gathered through a study conducted by the Department of Epidemiology at the Mario Negri Institute, which specifies that the first year examined (the 2002) considered the last (2006), the mortality rate in Europe rose from 17.9% to 16.7% every 100 cases.

“The studio – Cristina Bosetti said the Department of Epidemiology Negri Institute – indicates a persistent and steady reduction in mortality tumor of breast in Europe over the last 25-30 years, as also observed in the United States. This is mainly due to advances in therapy. More favorable trends in young women suggest that the overall mortality for breast cancer in Europe will decline further in the near future.

In the EU, is estimated to decrease by 9% between 2006 and 2012, reaching a mortality rate of around 15 per 100,000 women and about 88,000 deaths. At the end of 2012, over 25,000 will then be the deaths avoided each year in Europe compared to the mortality of the ’80s. “Major steps, which should make us, hope for the future, and that much more must the massive awareness campaigns to promote greater awareness among women about the importance of early diagnosis.

On this front, should be emphasized that the tools available are becoming more effective, there will be a short replacement of the Mammography, Examination of screening not too reliable, with the new tests based on the use of fiber optics, much more reliable. But the care, chemo or the radiotherapy are being refined, thanks to greater “personalization” of therapy and drugs cancer used in each case. Well, let’s be positive and never lower our guard against this disease so insidious.
